Welcome to the blog for Colgate University's interdisciplinary course on food. This is the place to keep up with what students in the course are experiencing in their work at Common Thread Community Farm and through their everyday encounters with food.

Community Action Fund for Women in Africa

The CAFWA is a non-profit organization which facilitates the training of poverty stricken, rural africans in the farming method of permaculture (which we heard a little bit about during our visit to the Colgate Community Garden.) Currently the group is focusing on Northern Uganda where, with the help of my fathers colleagues, permagardening training is taking place. The training combines permaculture and bio-intensive methods (such as compost soup, see next post,) to maximize the use and benefits of the available local resources to increase yield in smaller plots of land. This method of grassroots community development is exactly what is needed in a continent plagued by disease and poverty, where subsistence living is harder than ever with changing weather patterns and lack of alternatives.
