The FDA is phasing out antibiotics in foods

A statement released yesterday by the FDA said that they are going to phase out the use of antibiotics in livestock.

This is a huge move because as we learned in King Corn, livestock use the vast majority of the antibiotics in the United States.

In an article by Medical News Today, the author states that antibiotics have not only been used to keep the animals free of dangerous bacterium such as E. Coli, but have also been used to boost growth in the animal, and reduce the feed that the animal needs. The overuse of antibiotics in agriculture has led to decreased rates of effectiveness of the drugs to the point where many medical professionals believe that we will soon be living in a post-antibiotic age.

This is important because it shows that fixing problems in agriculture with highly scientific solutions can lead to dire consequences. Maybe other quick fix solutions in industrial agriculture will be questioned as to their effectiveness as a result of this move by the FDA.
